WordPress is the most popular blog and Content Management Systems there is, it was originally used only by bloggers, but now its extra features have transformed it away from a pure blog system in to a full fledged CMS.
There are lots of of reasons to use Wordpress, first of all, it is free, it is also fast to install. When using the right web host you can have it working with in just a couple clicks. Aswell as this, there are tens of thousands of templates, some are free or cheap, some are premium. Developers have really gotten behind it in a big way so there are hundreds of plugins, there is a plugin for nearly everything you can think of!
For search engine optimisation Wordpress is brilliant, you have absolute control of the structure of your web site, with use of the right plug-ins you can optimise Wordpress so it’ll show in Google search engine listings with only a bit of effort.
A drawback of Wordpress (and any other open-source application) is that there are always updates. If you don’t keep Wordpress updated you risk your website being exploited and having your blog used for illegal activities.
The theme included with Wordpress is quite simple and good for search engine optimisation, with a small amount of code there isn’t a lot getting in the way of your content. It’s quite plain though, so if you’re wanting to have real readers you should probably look in to getting a better theme ASAP.
Creating articles and creation of categories is incredibly easy, with just a few clicks you’ll have a new category ready for use and with in a few moments you will be able to post your first blog.
It is worth turning off NoFollow for commenters as this will entice people to comment, many people comment on blogs to get themselves backlinks. To cut down spam comments just install a plug-in called Akismet to get rid of the majority of spammers. Akismet will find 99% of them, with the other 1% you can manually choose to accept or remove their comment.
With the use of other plug ins like the ‘Related Post’ plug in you can create contextual links between articles as well, once your readers have finished viewing your initial blog post they will be prompted to read another on a related topic.
Making use of Wordpress to generate more traffic to your main website is another idea. If you post tons of relevant information about your area of expertise each week, push all your blog posts to Twitter and all of the Web 2.0 sites, in a few months you will have many viewers reading your articles. At the same time your blog may become more important in Ask’s eyes for your relevant topic and move of your website to a higher position for the topic you really want to SEOize towards, and your Alexa rankings will rocket. If you’re wanting to make a website to sell then you need to have a great Alexa rank.
If you want to run more than one blog, Wordpress is also the best application for that. With the implementation of Wordpress MU you can create and run tens of blogs from a single Wordpress install. If you combine WordPress Mu with BuddyPress you have your own social media network, and it’s completely free!
On the whole there is no better blogging platform than Wordpress right now. With so many people behind it, it gets stronger and stronger every day. Given time Wordpress will be a good CMS, however there are not enough content management system templates for it yet. If you’re hunting for a great CMS you should take a look at Joomla and make use of Wordpress for your main blog.
